This question in its essence is a philosophical question, which is intended for and directed at still objects as parts of compositions that are located around us. The research is in fact an invitation to take a look attentively into compositions and what they contain, from a desire to understand the relationships that exist within them. Along with a belief that, by understanding a certain composition, it is possible to recognize its aesthetic output, which is created from the connection of one object to a more complex one. It is in fact an attempt to understand the silent and still environment which we live in, where there is a poetry, a beauty, an aesthetic and matter in the way things are ordered, placed, spread around and connected between themselves. _Practical work_ In my thesis I have researched the question: how are things organized in space? and, as in my practical work, I have decided to focus on this question and attempt a visual answer. In order to do that, I simply directed my attention to what exists around me, to the diverse spaces which exist parallel to my being, and sorted a list of spaces which I found typical and general to the everyday, especially to life in a city, with a personal guideline which is related to my own lifestyle and therefore related to me. From a human perspective, I observed the functionality of each space and what it contained. I conducted this research out of one of the assumptions from my thesis: things are present in every existing space around us, which connect and communicate among themselves as a part of one or more compositions. With an aim to have a comprehensive view on our surroundings, and what is contained there, I started with dividing our surroundings into the two main concepts of private and public space. Hence then, just like a walk from one point to another, from place to place, I looked closely and zoomed out, from the own private environment, the apartment, to the neighborhood, and through transportation, continued to the public, cultural and leisure spaces. Under each one of those headlines, I chose a variety of spaces that represent the basic idea of each. By watching and perceiving each space and what it contained, I noticed the compositions that appeared in it and paid attention to which things are part of it. I noted that there are things that have to be in each space and have to be arranged in a specific way in order to make the particular space what it is. I chose to implement that understanding into a visual approach where I illustrated each space and the things that are contained in it. In other words: I highlighted the order of integral things in each space. Out of a desire to deliver the essence and functionality of each space in the clearest, straightest and most absolute way, I decided to display in each space only the things that had to be there; that is, to keep only the most minimal visual information which needs to be visualized in each space, in order to understand each space’s character and role. As part of this approach of simplifying the information to a minimum, I drew the fundamental things in each space with marks that directly refer to each thing’s shape and nature. I used simple, elemental elements, with no colors, in order to refer clearly to the shape and the tone of the things themselves. By using the legend that I have created, it is possible to understand each shape and which type of thing it represents. Likewise, as mentioned, each space in general, and in particular within the collection of spaces in this work, has its functionality for us; therefore, and as part of those spaces being used by us, they also have a dictionary definition that was created in order to characterize the specificity of these spaces. Those definitions being an integral part of the spaces’ nature and our understanding of them, I chose to have them as an unseparated part of each space, and write the definitions in each illustration as an integral part of it being what it is. This is first of all an attempt to understand the order of things in the spaces surrounding us, and what they contain, namely, compositions which exist in them and consist from relations between elements. Therein the character of the spaces’ and the compositions’ quality depends, among other things, on form, shape and distances. Additionally, this attempt to visualize the spaces’ substance in this simple way, informed by a minimal and essential approach, which, in its turn, comes from a perspective of simplifying the information around us to the minimum that is necessary, in order to perceive the essence of the content fully as it is. Equally, from a belief that, if it was possible to diagnose, notice and understand the fine detail in the visual information around us, then it would be possible to also point, when executing it, to what is more important and what is less so, in order to deliver an idea, concept or any visual more clearly. *Photography: Avi Valdman
